Working & Earning Income on ODSP

Many ODSP recipients want to work part-time or full-time to supplement their monthly income. Ontario Disability Support Program rules are designed to encourage employment by allowing you to keep a significant portion of your pay.

The $1,000 Flat Net Exemption Rule

Under current ODSP policy:

  • The first $1,000 in net monthly earnings is 100% exempt. Your ODSP income support is not reduced by a single dollar.
  • For any net earnings above $1,000 in a calendar month, ODSP deducts 50 cents for every dollar earned.
  • You also receive an extra $100 Work-Related Benefit added directly to your monthly ODSP payment for every month you report earnings.

Example Calculation

If you earn $1,300 net in a month:

  1. $1,000 is completely exempt.
  2. $300 remains subject to the 50% deduction rule ($150 deduction).
  3. You receive the +$100 Work-Related Benefit.
  4. Your ODSP payment is only reduced by $50 net, while you take home $1,300 in job earnings!

Remember to submit your pay stubs by the 7th of each month using MyBenefits or to your local caseworker to ensure your payments are calculated accurately without delays.
