Overcoming the Fear of Transitioning to Employment
One of the biggest concerns for ODSP recipients starting full-time employment is the potential loss of essential health benefits and financial security if the job ends unexpectedly.
Ontario Disability Support Program safety-net policies are specifically designed so you can enter the workforce with complete peace of mind.
1. Extended Health Benefit (EHB)
If your job income is high enough that your monthly ODSP financial check drops to $0:
- You can remain eligible for the Extended Health Benefit (EHB).
- Coverage Included: EHB continues to cover your prescription drugs, dental care, vision care, diabetic supplies, and medical transportation even when you no longer receive monthly income support!
- Requirement: You simply need to demonstrate that your ongoing health-related costs exceed the difference in income.
2. Transitional Health Benefit (THB)
If you exit ODSP due to employment and your employer does not provide comparable private health coverage, the Transitional Health Benefit (THB) provides ongoing drug, dental, and vision coverage until your employer benefits kick in.
3. Rapid Reinstatement Safety Net
If you leave ODSP due to job earnings or spousal income, but later lose your job or your disability flares up:
- No Need to Re-Apply: You qualify for Rapid Reinstatement without going through the lengthy Disability Determination Package process again!
- Fast-Track Payments: Contact your former ODSP office, provide proof of financial eligibility, and your income support payments can resume immediately.
Safety Net AssuranceRapid reinstatement eligibility has no expiry limit if your medical disability status was categorized as non-reviewable. You never lose your underlying disability qualification!
