Attending College or University While on ODSP
ODSP recipients can pursue post-secondary education through colleges, universities, or private career colleges. Funding from the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is specifically structured to work alongside your ODSP benefits.
Exempt vs. Non-Exempt OSAP Funding
OSAP funding is divided into educational expenses and living costs:
1. 100% Exempt OSAP Funds
- Educational Expenses: OSAP grants and loans used for direct educational costs—such as tuition, compulsory fees, books, supplies, and disability-related educational equipment—are 100% exempt as income and assets under ODSP rules.
- Bursaries for Students with Disabilities (BSWD): Federal and provincial disability bursaries for equipment/tutors are completely exempt.
2. Living Cost Portion
- OSAP loan portions designated specifically for general living costs (room and board) may be deducted from your ODSP check depending on whether you receive basic needs/shelter support from ODSP.
Full-Time Student Earnings Exemption
If you work part-time or seasonal jobs while enrolled as a full-time student in post-secondary education:
- 100% Earnings Exemption: All earnings from employment or self-employment are 100% exempt from ODSP deductions while you are enrolled as a full-time student!
OSAP Application TipWhen applying for OSAP, declare that you are receiving ODSP benefits. OSAP will automatically adjust your loan assessment so your tuition and disability bursaries are prioritized!
