What is the Medical Transportation Benefit?

If you must travel to attend medical appointments, therapy sessions, or specialist treatments, ODSP covers your transportation costs under Directive 9.12.

Covered appointments include visits to doctors, dentists, hospitals, mental health counseling, physiotherapy, and addiction treatment programs.

Qualification Threshold & Rates

  • Minimum Monthly Threshold: Travel expenses must total at least $15 in a single calendar month to qualify for reimbursement.
  • Kilometer Rates: If you or a family member drive your personal vehicle, ODSP pays a set per-kilometer rate (typically 18¢ to 40¢ per km depending on Northern Ontario vs Southern Ontario rates).
  • Public Transit: Cost of bus, subway, or train fares.
  • Taxi Fares: Covered if your doctor certifies that public transit or driving is impossible due to your disability.

How to Get Reimbursed

Step 1: Obtain the Travel Log Form

Request the Medical Transportation Record Form from your local ODSP office.

Step 2: Have Healthcare Providers Sign

At every medical appointment, have the receptionist, clinic nurse, or doctor sign or stamp your travel log verifying your attendance.

Step 3: Out-of-Town Appointments

For travel outside your local municipality (e.g. traveling to a specialized hospital in Toronto or Ottawa), ask your doctor to complete an Out-of-Town Medical Transportation Request prior to travel so ODSP can pre-approve meal allowances or accommodation expenses!

Always keep physical or digital copies of transit passes, parking stubs, and taxi receipts attached to your monthly log form when submitting to your caseworker.
