What is the Employment Start-Up Benefit (ESUB)?
When you start a new job, begin a training program, or launch a self-employment business, starting out often comes with upfront costs.
The Employment Start-Up Benefit (ESUB) provides up to $500 in a 12-month period under ODSP Directive 9.1 to cover initial employment-related expenses.
What Expenses Are Covered Under ESUB?
Approved expenses include:
- Work Attire & Uniforms: Work boots, steel-toed safety footwear, uniforms, or professional clothing required for your role.
- Tools & Equipment: Specialty hand tools, trade equipment, or job-required accessories.
- Licensing & Membership Fees: Professional association dues, trade certification fees, or background checks required for hiring.
- Initial Transportation: First month transit passes, gas money, or taxi fares to commute to work before your first paycheck.
How to Request the ESUB Benefit
- Provide Confirmation: Give your caseworker proof of job confirmation (e.g. an offer letter, shift schedule, or self-employment registration).
- List Your Expenses: Provide a written list or quotes for the work items you need to purchase.
- Issuance: Funds are added directly to your next payment or issued as an immediate emergency payment.
Frequency LimitYou can receive up to $500 once in every 12-month period. If you change jobs or start a new contract within the year, you can request remaining funds up to the $500 cap!
