What is the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)?

The Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is a non-refundable tax credit administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). It reduces the amount of income tax that a person with a severe and prolonged disability (or their supporting family member) has to pay.

More importantly for ODSP recipients, DTC approval is the essential key that unlocks major federal disability programs, including the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) and the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB).

Key Financial Benefits Unlocked by the DTC

  1. RDSP Eligibility: Unlocks up to $70,000 in matching grants and $20,000 in free bonds.
  2. Retroactive Tax Refunds: If approved retroactively, you can adjust past tax returns for up to 10 years, often generating substantial lump-sum tax refund checks.
  3. Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) Disability Supplement: Adds an extra annual disability supplement for working recipients.
  4. Canada Disability Benefit (CDB): Qualification for the federal $200/month benefit requires DTC certification.

How to Apply: Form T2201 Step-by-Step

Step 1: Complete Part A (Applicant Section)

Fill out your personal information on CRA Form T2201 or complete the online digital application via CRA My Account.

Step 2: Have Your Medical Practitioner Complete Part B

Take the form to an authorized medical practitioner (physician, nurse practitioner, occupational therapist, optometrist, audiologist, or psychologist). They must certify that your impairment in physical or mental functions is:

  • Severe and prolonged (has lasted or is expected to last for at least 12 continuous months).
  • Affects you markedly in one domain (e.g., walking, dressing, vision, mental functions) or significantly in two or more cumulative domains.

Step 3: Submit to CRA

Submit the completed form to the CRA online or by mail. Processing typically takes 4 to 8 weeks.

Be sure to check the box on Form T2201 that requests the CRA to automatically adjust your prior tax returns for all eligible back years. This ensures you receive any retroactive tax refunds automatically!
