Mandatory Health Benefits Overview
Every person on ODSP (and their covered spouse/dependents) automatically receives comprehensive health benefits designed to cover essential medical expenses.
1. Prescription Drug Coverage (ODB)
- Coverage: Prescriptions listed on the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) Formulary are 100% covered.
- Co-payment: ODSP recipients pay $0 co-payment per prescription (the standard $2 ODB fee is waived for social assistance).
- Exceptional Access Program (EAP): If you require a medication not on the standard formulary, your doctor can submit an EAP request to the Ministry for special coverage.
2. Dental Coverage
- Basic Dental Services: Examinations, cleanings, fillings, extractions, root canals, and emergency dental care are covered under the ODSP Dental Schedule.
- Dependent Children: Children under 18 receive comprehensive care through Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO).
- Dentures: Denture replacement and repairs are partially or fully covered with pre-approval.
3. Vision Care Benefits
- Eye Examinations: Routine eye exams are covered once every 24 months for adults (annually for youth and seniors).
- Eyeglasses: Basic frames and lenses are covered every 3 years (or sooner if your prescription changes significantly).
- Repairs: Repairs to broken frames or lenses are covered.
