How Housing Category Affects Your Monthly ODSP Check
Under ODSP regulations, your monthly payment calculation depends heavily on whether your living situation is classified as Renter/Homeowner (Shelter Allowance) or Board & Lodging.
Understanding the legal distinction ensures you receive the maximum allowable financial support for your living setup.
1. Rent / Own Category (Basic Needs + Shelter)
If you pay rent separately to a landlord or own a home:
- Your check is split into two parts: Basic Needs Allowance plus Shelter Allowance.
- Actual Costs Paid: Your shelter allowance pays your actual housing expenses (rent, utilities, property tax, home insurance, water) up to the maximum shelter cap (e.g. $582/mo for a single person).
- You provide rent receipts, lease agreements, or utility bills to prove actual shelter costs.
2. Board & Lodging Category
If you live with someone (e.g., parents or family) who provides both shelter and meals together for one flat monthly rate:
- ODSP pays a single Board & Lodging rate instead of separate Basic Needs and Shelter allowances.
- A special Special Boarder Allowance (currently $71/month) is automatically added to board-and-lodging payments.
Converting Board & Lodging to Renter Status
If you live with family but buy your own groceries separately and pay rent for your bedroom/space:
- Provide a Rent Receipt or Lease Agreement stating you pay rent for space only.
- Confirm in writing that you purchase and prepare your meals separately.
- Your status can then be adjusted to the Renter category, often unlocking higher overall monthly support!
Utility Inclusion TipIf heating, electricity, or water expenses are billed separately from your rent, submit those bills to your caseworker so your shelter allowance reaches the maximum allowable limit.
